Betten & Resch – Germany 2025
JUVE Comment
This IP firm has established expertise in electronics patents, particularly in computer technology, AI, semiconductors and medical devices. While litigation activity has been quieter recently with no new proceedings initiated, the team secured a significant victory in 2025 for long-standing client Nipro against Fresenius Medical Care concerning dialysis machines, with the Federal Court of Justice ruling in the client’s favour.
The firm’s thriving prosecution practice is built on a substantial international client base, particularly from Asia and the US, including prominent names such as Google and Nichia. The team maintains a strong presence in EPO oppositions for regular client Widex.
Following Siemens’ sale of its high-voltage equipment division HSP, the team acquired responsibility for managing a substantial portfolio.
Betten & Resch ranks among Germany’s medium-sized patent law firms that consistently grow their prosecution business while pursuing sustainable team expansion. The firm maintains a steady focus on developing internal talent, recently elevating another mechanical engineer to partnership. It also successfully attracts and occasionally regains patent attorneys from competitors, as demonstrated by two appointments this year.
European set-up
The team’s UPC debut came in a medical device case that settled in late 2024. The patent attorneys represented Abbott alongside Taylor Wessing in both national courts and before the UPC. Despite gaining early experience in a complex UPC case and maintaining strong ties with Taylor Wessing’s lawyers, the firm has yet to build on this initial success.
