Tom Oliver is a partner at Powell Gilbert, a specialist European IP firm.

Tom specialises in intellectual property litigation and practices as a solicitor advocate in England and Wales, as a solicitor in Ireland and as a UPC representative.

He has extensive experience before the English courts, the UPC, in opposition proceedings at the EPO, and in arbitration proceedings.

He is commonly involved in devising multi-jurisdictional patent litigation strategies across Europe, Asia and North America and has co-ordinated cases in over 30 countries worldwide.

Tom represented clients in several of the first cases brought in the UPC, acting for clients in proceedings brought before the Düsseldorf, Milan, and Nordic Baltic divisions. He has appeared as an advocate before the UPC Court of Appeal on multiple occasions.

Before the English Courts, Tom has represented clients in a wide range of high-profile disputes, including numerous pharmaceutical cases involving preliminary injunctions and high value damages inquiries.

Tom also assists clients in resolving contractual IP licensing disputes, and has acted for clients in arbitrations under the LCIA and ICC rules.

He has advised in relation to disputes spanning a wide range of industry sectors and technologies. With an academic background in biochemistry, Tom is well suited to handle complex life science disputes and has represented clients in a variety of cases concerning pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical devices. He has also acted for clients in high profile patent litigation concerning robotics, wind turbines, video codecs, computer compilers, and telecoms standards. He has extensive experience of disputes concerning the FRAND licensing of standard essential patents.

Tom is co-chair of Licensing Executives Society International’s dispute resolution committee, and has lectured on Oxford University’s post-graduate diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice.

Tom spent several months seconded to a leading German firm specialising in patent litigation.
