Pure patent attorney firm Torggler & Hofmann is the hidden champion among the five nominees for the JUVE Patent Award UPC Firm of the Year 2025. A small Austrian boutique from the tranquil city of Innsbruck, it nevertheless had more cases when the UPC launched than many of its competitors, and has cleverly exploited the court's different locations.

Litigation at the UPC is the natural progression of this firm’s work for its regular clientele. Its strategy for the UPC is as simple as it is pragmatic. Whenever the Innsbruck patent attorneys filed lawsuits for their clients in Germany to cover a larger market, they needed the help of lawyers. Now, they can handle comprehensive litigation on their own, especially when clients want judgments with a wider reach.
This approach has enabled Markus Gangl and Florian Robl not only to conduct the first hearing before the Vienna local division, but also to litigate at the divisions in Düsseldorf and Milan.
The patent attorney firm’s classic SME clients stem from mechanical and control engineering. These include many market leaders in what is a highly specialist field, from Austrian family businesses to international corporations. Representing core clients such as Progress Maschinen is thus serving the firm well.
Torggler & Hofmann is a hidden champion here. With six patent attorneys and two offices in Austria, it was formed two years ago from the merger of law firms Torggler & Hofinger and Hofmann & Fechner. Gangl has since opened an office in Switzerland.
As a classic patent attorney boutique, Torggler & Hofmann focuses on prosecution work. However, the two physicists Robl and Gangl quickly recognised the opportunities of the UPC for their clients. Since the start, they have carved out a name for themselves for representing SMEs without the support of lawyers, unlike their competitors.
As a result, the firm relies on a lean team structure — and thus manageable costs for its clients. Among the other patent attorney firms active at the UPC, Torggler & Hofmann stands out with its small team and the experience its has acquired in UPC litigation without lawyers.
