JUVE Patent recently carried out extensive research in the German patent market, culminating in the publication of the German patent rankings. Our latest research highlighted Svenja Schwandt as one of the current ‘Ones to Watch Germany’.

Medical Science, a Master’s programme for physicists focused on medical applications, epitomises the mindset of Svenja Schwandt (34), who relishes thinking outside the box.. During her studies, she discovered her love for consultancy work alongside her enthusiasm for analysing complex issues.

These interests led her to the patent attorney profession and Cohausz & Florack. The firm attracted her not only through its commitment to training but also because half of the candidates at the start of her training were women.

She found strong support during her training, particularly from Arnd Ziebell’s team. Together they represented Aiko Solar against competitor Maxeon from 2023 onwards in proceedings in Germany and the Netherlands, specifically coordinating reverse engineering teams and expert witnesses to prove non-infringement. She now also is intensively involved in Aiko Solar’s IP portfolio development across Germany and Europe.

Expert in materials and medical technology

Additionally, she works in Gottfried Schüll’s team for LG Energy Solution, enforcing the renewable energy patent portfolio. Schwandt specialises in materials and medical technology, with expertise in portfolio management and aims to expand her litigation experience. She already builds this expertise through her work in EPO oppositions, where she regularly represents clients such as aluminium rolling and recycling company Speira.

Clients praise the young patent attorney for her role in other complex procedural matters. Beyond her client work, the Associated Partner actively participates in the Women in IP network and advocates for greater visibility of queer people in the IP sector. This involvement reflects her comfort in addressing these issues in her professional environment. Her biggest challenge last year came from a personal context – delivering her sister’s wedding speech. Though not technically complex, she found presenting it just as enjoyable as her professional speaking engagements.
