Gulde & Partner, a mixed firm of patent attorneys and lawyers, has further expanded its Berlin headquarters following a merger with the smaller Berlin patent firm, Jungblut & Seuss. The latter firm consists of two patent attorneys, who are the firm’s name partners.

Two new additions

Thomas Seuss

Thomas Seuß

Thomas Seuß, who has an academic background in chemistry, has joined Gulde & Partner as counsel. Before starting his career as a patent attorney in private practice, Seuß led the patent department of Berlin-based Schering AG. The pharmaceutical company was later integrated into the Bayer Group. Seuß also has good US contacts.

A second patent attorney, Bernhard Jungblut, is also a chemist and began his career at patent attorney firm Andrejewski, Honke & Partner in Essen.

While the merger came into effect at the beginning of the year, the integration of Jungblut & Seuss will be completed in spring.

Targeted addition

The merger should strengthen Gulde & Partner’s expertise in the chemical and life sciences sectors. The firm has a particular focus on automotive and transport, digital communication, computer technology and electronics, as well as a strong focus on Asian companies.

It also has a strong reputation for mobile phone litigation. Gulde & Partner represented Haier in the Federal Patent Court’s leading decisions on German FRAND case law. The firm has close ties to Chinese companies, with the patent attorneys representing Oppo and Xiaomi in various infringement proceedings concerning mobile phone patents.

Strong for SMEs

According to its website Jungblut & Seuss also advises on patent prosecution in process engineering, electronics, semiconductor technology, software, telecommunication and mechanics.

According to the EPO register, the small Berlin law firm mainly works for German SMEs. It recently filed extensive European patent applications for companies such as the Berlin-based medical device manufacturer W.O.M. World of Medicine, which is also active in the US market.

The firm filed more extensive patent applications for the Luxembourg Institute of Health, pharmaceutical manufacturers Berlirem and nsc Pharmaden, and the building materials manufacturer PohlCon and its subsidiary PUK Group.

Growth in Düsseldorf

To strengthen its presence in the Rhineland and at the important patent court in Düsseldorf, Gulde & Partner opened an office in spring 2023. At the time, its starting team consisted of patent attorneys Niklas Mellmann, Christian Salewski and Petra Westphal. Berlin-based partner Nicolas Haße heads the office.

However, at the beginning of the new year Gulde & Partner promoted Niklas Mellmann to partner. He has an electrical engineering background and was active in various infringement and revocation proceedings for telecommunication clients such as AVM, Oppo and TCL.
