Previously a partner at Berggren’s Helsinki office, Michael Nielsen will work closely with EIP’s London office as the firm does not have a presence in Finland. This marks his second stint with a UK law firm, having previously worked at Carpmaels & Ransford from 2012 as a patent attorney trainee and later as a European and UK patent attorney.

In 2019, Nielsen moved to Boco in Helsinki before joining Berggren two years later. He joins EIP as of counsel in a full-time consultant role.

Nielsen specialises in physics, software and medical devices. As a qualified UPC representative, his practice will focus on litigation before the UPC and EPO. At Berggren, he most recently led the firm’s UPC group.

Nielsen’s former firm, Berggren, is currently involved in a UPC case. It is representing Vahterus Oy in an action concerning a device for separating droplets brought by Euro Heat d.o.o at the Copenhagen local division. Nielsen was part of the team. His clients also included companies from the paper technology, quantum computing and video games sectors.

Nielsen bolsters EIP’s UPC team

At EIP, Nielsen will primarily support UPC litigation. “Michael’s strategic insight and deep UPC experience will make a formidable addition to our team,” says EIP’s CEO Magnus Hallin.

The firm has recently seen an uptick in UPC cases, with the German team led by Christof Höhne playing a strong role. A mixed German-UK team is handling cases in Düsseldorf and Milan for Labrador Diagnostics against bioMérieux regarding diagnostic devices. German partner Höhne is also co-counsel with Carpmaels & Ransford for Curio Bioscience against 10x Genomics over diagnostic devices at the Düsseldorf local division.

In recent weeks, EIP’s UPC activities have again concentrated on mobile phone SEPs, with actions for MediaTek against Huawei and for AsusTek and Celerity against Oppo and Xiaomi. The firm traditionally has a strong focus in this area.

EIP has a robust presence in the UK and an active German litigation team based in Düsseldorf. It is also one of the few UK law firms with a presence in Scandinavia. In 2022, EIP opened an office in Stockholm with five patent attorneys brought in from various Swedish IP firms. However, EIP has not yet established a lawyer practice in Scandinavia.
