Pentarc – UPC 2026

JUVE Comment

Pentarc burst onto the European patent scene as one of the most significant new arrivals, making an impressive debut at the UPC. The firm was established in October 2025 when five renowned partners, including Christian Lederer, Anja Lunze, Dietrich Kamlah and Jan Rektorschek, broke away from Taylor Wessing. This move was motivated by the partners’ desire to escape conflicts within the international firm, which had hindered their ability to represent implementers in SEP cases.

The foundation for such a strong start was the existing UPC litigation experience that the founding partners and their teams brought from their previous firm. At Taylor Wessing, they had been active in UPC proceedings for clients such as Abbott and Nichia. Although these clients remained with Taylor Wessing, the partners brought a substantial amount of their own UPC business, catapulting them directly into the league of highly active boutiques at the new court alongside firms like Peterreins Schley and Krieger Mes & Graf v. der Groeben.

A significant portion of the UPC business involves mobile communications and video technology for Samsung, Transsion, and Disney. However, the firm demonstrated technical breadth from the outset, with cases concerning car seats for Wonderland, pharmaceuticals for Zentiva, and solar technology for Chint and Astronergy. Predominantly active on the defendant side, the firm has thus far only filed claims for Wonderland and German metal powder manufacturer Nanoval.

Despite the many changes, one aspect remains consistent from the previous law firm. In all its current UPC cases, the partners continue their established approach of collaborating with German patent attorneys from firms such as Paustian & Partner, Wuesthoff & Wuesthoff, and Zimmermann & Partner.

Following this successful launch, Pentarc’s challenge will be to establish the necessary structures to ensure a steady flow of UPC work for its large team. The firm will also need to cement its relationships with international cooperation partners and German patent attorney firms, who are also sought after by other boutiques.
