About Joel Coles
Joel Coles is a Partner at Powell Gilbert, a specialist European IP firm.
Joel is a Solicitor of England & Wales and the Republic of Ireland and practices patent law in both the UK and Ireland. He is also a UPC representative and has represented clients in UPC proceedings before the multiple local and regional divisions as well as the Court of Appeal.
He has worked on several recent leading patent cases before the UPC and UK courts in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields, including two recent cases before the UK Supreme Court. Before becoming a lawyer, Joel completed a PhD in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge and his practice is focused on legally and technically complex disputes.
Joel’s strong life sciences background has been of particular relevance for his recent work relating to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and healthcare technologies, including vaccines, small molecules, antibody therapeutics and technologies, DNA sequencing, spatial genomics, and diagnostic platforms.
He has represented clients before the Munich Local Division, the Hague Local Division, the Milan Local Division, the Lisbon Local Division and argued UPC appeals before the Court of Appeal in Luxembourg. Joel also acts in oppositions before the European Patent Office.
