JUVE Patent

Viering Jentschura & Partner – Germany 2024

JUVE Comment

The patent attorneys at this mixed German IP firm are renowned for their advice on mechanics, electronics and IT. The firm is regularly seen in EPO oppositions and nullity actions concerning semiconductors and electronics patents. These result from its extensive litigation work for companies such as Infineon, Intel and Osram.

This year the firm lost some associates, but also hired new ones. Overall, it is still the right size for extensive litigation, but is less frequently seen in larger proceedings than competitors and has not impressed recently with any economically significant litigation.

European set-up

Even in the start-up phase of the UPC, the firm has not yet actively appeared in proceedings, even if it advised in the background. That said, the firm has rarely represented clients previously in pan-European disputes and some clients, such as Intel, also maintain client relationships with other law firms for litigation, such as leading law firm Hoyng ROKH Monegier.

For Viering Jentschura, the UPC also means heavy competition. With its mixed approach, it can offer a compact range of services for regular German, US and Asian clients. Its expansion of Chinese clientele is an interesting strategy that could also pay off in litigation.
