About Us

Ever since it has been founded in 1977 in Berlin, Maikowski & Ninnemann is a firm of patent attorneys, today with around 20 qualified attorneys and four offices in Germany (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Leipzig). The focus of our patent attorneys is (i) patent litigation before the relevant courts in Germany and the EU and (ii) patent prosecution before the German Patent Office and the European Patent office in patent prosecution matters. We are in particular renowned for our work in the patent litigation sector.

All of our attorneys are fully qualified and competent to represent our clients before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). We can accordingly provide valuable advice regarding both the prosecution of the Unitary Patent as well as litigation matters before the UPC. For example, due to our extensive litigation experience before the German Courts, we know well many of the judges who have now been appointed as judges acting at the UPC. Furthermore, a pure patent attorney firm, Maikowski & Ninnemann often teams up with specialist attorneys-at-law in law firms to provide clients with a seamless service in patent infringement and invalidity cases before the relevant courts. This litigation experience is unusual among patent attorney firms in Germany, and means we are well positioned to advise on proceedings before the new Unified Patent Court.

Our technical expertise spans technologies including communication and information technologies, software, electrical engineering, physics, and mechanical engineering to medical technology, chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology. Many of our attorneys have advanced technical degrees, and several of them lecture at institutions such as the Free University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin and ETH Zurich.

We advise clients that are active in a wide range of industries, including software, telecoms, semiconductors, medical devices, automotive, engineering, renewable energy and robotics. Maikowski & Ninnemann represents a number of leading mobile phone manufacturers and telecommunications/IT services providers in complex litigation matters related to standard-essential patents and FRAND licensing in the telecoms and IT sectors.

Our clients range from start-up companies and research institutes to some of the world’s largest multinationals. We focus on strategic IP matters, often working very closely with in-house counsel in Germany or overseas to protect their innovation by drafting and prosecuting effective patent applications and managing portfolios. We prioritise responding to clients’ needs and concerns, and building long-term relationships: we believe that a good understanding between client and attorney is fundamental to achieving the best solutions for protecting and enforcing IP rights.

We also advise on trademark and design matters, handling prosecution before the DPMA and EUIPO, and we manage a number of trademark portfolios for clients. This includes coordinating prosecution across multiple jurisdictions.
