About Dr. Kirchner
Dr. Christian Kirchner is a partner in the firm. He was admitted as a German Patent Attorney in 2009 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2010. Dr. Kirchner practices in the fields of physics/mechanical engineering, software-based technologies, and medical technology.
Dr. Kirchner has been working in the field of intellectual property (IP) since 2005, first in training at Wallinger & Partner, from 2009 as a Patent Attorney and, since 2015, as a partner of the law firm Wallinger Ricker Schlotter Tostmann. Dr. Kirchner is admitted as representative at the UPC (European Patent Litigator (UPC)) since June 2024.
Dr. Kirchner’s practice spans a broad spectrum of IP proceedings, including patent opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office and German Federal Patent Court, as well as nullity actions before both the German Federal Patent Court and the Federal Court of Justice. His expertise also encompasses the preparation of IP opinions—ranging from validity analyses to infringement and freedom-to-operate assessments—and the drafting and prosecution of patents and utility models in both national and international forums, including the German Patent and Trademark Office, European Patent Office, and WIPO.
With a deep technical background in physics, classical mechanics, materials science, and medical engineering, Dr. Kirchner is particularly adept at navigating the complexities of computer-implemented inventions and emerging digital technologies, such as connected systems, numerical simulations, and machine learning. His technical expertise represents a significant asset in securing the protection of innovative developments in physics, mechanical engineering, and medical technology.
