JUVE Patent

Bosch Jehle – Germany 2019

JUVE Comment

The patent attorneys at this Munich IP firm are known for litigation over mobile communication patents. This renown mainly stems from the firm’s successful litigation for non-practising entity SLC, but this flagship case has now largely come to an end. BJ is yet to implement its plans to capitalise on its expertise in mobile telecommunication patents gained through NPE suits and advise more companies. The reason for this departure from NPE work is the firm’s filing work for industrial core clients. The firm is increasingly seen at the side of other law firms, as the once close cooperation between BJ and litigators at major German full-service firm Noerr has decreased. The firms mainly cooperated in NPE suits, but this move makes sense if both outfits want to step up litigation for their automotive clients in connected cars. BJ still needs to build up a presence here, but its recognised expertise in SEP and FRAND issues is an excellent reference for this work.

Strengths

Semiconductor and software patents, litigation involving mobile communications.

European strategy

Given the loose ties to Noerr, it is currently unclear how the firm plans to remain competitive in cross-border mobile communications cases. The uncertainty around the UPC means BJ has time to adjust its strategy. With its medium size and expertise in mobile communications, the firm could operate as an independent outfit. On the other hand, BJ is also an attractive candidate for a merger with British or US firms looking to enter the German market.
