Simmons & Simmons – France 2020
Rankings
JUVE Comment
The small litigation team at this large international firm is primarily known for representing clients in the life sciences sector, for instance successfully defending Merck in unusual infringement proceedings involving 100 patients. The firm is seen in far fewer patent infringement proceedings, however, than firms at the top of the market. The team was not involved in the most high-stakes cases before the French courts. Working with the Simmons teams in London and Düsseldorf to build on client relationships appears strategically logical, since both teams boast excellent connections in the pharma sector that would suit Paris well.
European strategy
Simmons & Simmons now has a focused continent-wide growth strategy with a focus on life sciences, electronics and financial services. Even now the firm is already prepared for cross-border disputes all over Europe, especially when it comes to pharma patents. The Paris office can contribute to this, but is currently weaker than the teams in London and Düsseldorf. The London-Amsterdam axis is particularly strong. The Dutch team is well known for its work regarding mobile communications. Simmons & Simmons has also strengthened the Milan office, in particular with the arrival of a team from a local boutique. But there are some gaps in the continental practice. The loss of a partner in Munich in 2018 does mean that this important office is currently the Achilles’ heel of the European practice.
