Caroline Haas is a German and European patent attorney. She focuses on post-grant proceedings of European patents at the European Patent Office (EPO), German patents at the German Federal Patent Court, and patent infringement proceedings before national German courts. Caroline leverages her training as both a biochemist and chemist to work with clients across the life sciences sector, including in biotechnology, biologics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, medical devices and diagnostics, nanotechnology, food and beverages, and textiles industries.
She represents both opponents and patent proprietors in German and European post-grant proceedings, particularly in oppositions of European patents, nullity suits of German patents, and cancellations of utility models. Her experience covers all stages of post-grant proceedings, including attacking and defending patents in written and oral proceedings at the EPO as well as subsequent appeal proceedings before the Boards of Appeal.
Caroline is experienced in high-profile, multi-party oppositions. In addition to supporting clients in European and German patent validity matters, she advises clients in enforcing intellectual property rights as well as defending alleged infringers at national German courts. Caroline develops portfolio strategies, including supplementary protection (SPC) and conducts due diligence and freedom to operate analyses.
Prior to her legal career, Caroline obtained a doctorate in biochemistry, analyzing the 3D structure of chromatin remodelers with electron microscopy. Her research was published in the renowned journal Cell, and she was awarded several prizes and scholarships.
